Post-Op Scar Tissue Treatment
Post-Op Scar Tissue Treatment
Scar tissue treatment is performed by a registered massage therapist and addresses scars from cesarean section scars and other post-operative scars, such as ACL surgery scars, compartment syndrome scars, etc.
What is Scar Tissue?
Scar tissue is the result of the body healing a wound or cut by depositing cells that create collagen fibres that turn into dense collagenous fibres. Although this is a natural healing process of the body, scar tissue can sometimes cause adhesions between the connective tissue laters. This can result in less than optimal circulation and innervation around the scar and connective tissue. Scars can often have a larger amount of nociceptive fibres, which are nerve fibres that conduce pain, often leading to persistent discomfort.
Addressing and treating the scar early on in the healing phase can help with this inflammatory cascade and have better results for the end phase of scar healing.
What does Acupuncture do?
Acupuncture for scar tissue helps to stimulate the mechanoreceptors and nociceptors in the skin and surrounding tissues that influence the inhibitory neural mediators - thereby counteracting the neuropeptides that cause inflammation. Reducing the inflammation caused by the nerve signals helps the healing process of the scar.
Acupuncture is also used to reduce the restrictions and adhesions to the surrounding connective tissue that are caused by the buildup of collagen. Acupuncture for post-op scar healing is helpful if there’s stiffness or a difference in sensation around the scar.
This treatment can help with:
Reducing stiffness in the scarred area to improve movement.
Easing pain caused by tight or thick scar tissue.
Softening scars to make them less noticeable and smoother.
Improving flexibility by restoring range of motion.
Enhancing healing through improved blood flow.
Preventing tightness by stopping scar tissue from restricting muscles and tissues.
Balancing sensation by addressing numbness or sensitivity around the scar.
